How to Overlay GPX Speed, Route, and Elevation on Video

Import your cycling footage and a time-stamped GPX track, align the track with the first matching moment in the video, select the available route, elevation, distance, and speed displays, then preview and export. Speed is derived from consecutive GPS points when the GPX file does not contain recorded speed.

Step-by-step workflow

    Inspect the GPX track

    Confirm that it contains track points, timestamps, latitude, longitude, and preferably elevation.

    Import video and GPX

    Choose MP4 or MOV footage and the GPX file in Ride Data Overlay.

    Align timestamps

    Accept the suggested offset when it matches, or adjust until landmarks and movement agree.

    Select available displays

    Enable the route, elevation, distance, and speed displays that the parsed track supports.

    Validate and export

    Check several points across the ride before rendering the final MP4.

How GPX speed is calculated

Standard GPX track points provide position and time. When recorded speed is absent, Ride Data Overlay calculates speed from the distance and time between consecutive GPS points.

GPS sampling gaps, tunnels, dense tree cover, or paused recordings can create jumps. The derived speed is useful for visualization but is not equivalent to a wheel-speed sensor sample stored in FIT.

Sensor extensions

Some GPX exporters include heart rate, cadence, or power as extensions. Ride Data Overlay reads supported extension values when present, but extension availability differs by exporter.

Use FIT when data fidelity matters

  • Prefer FIT for recorded power, heart rate, cadence, device speed, and compact activity data.
  • Use GPX when you mainly need route, location, elevation, or compatibility with a GPX-only service.
  • Do not convert FIT to GPX unless the destination workflow requires it; conversion can discard fields.

Frequently asked questions

Can a GPX file contain heart rate or power?

Yes, but only through exporter-specific extensions. Those gauges appear only when supported values are present.

Why does GPX speed look noisy?

GPS-derived speed depends on point spacing and location quality. Gaps or inaccurate points can produce visible changes.

Can I use a GPX file exported from Strava?

A time-stamped track can provide route and derived motion data, but the exact sensor fields depend on what the export retains.
